Twice a year during Amsterdam Fashion Week, my bestie wanna-be-a-star and I host the bi-annual ‘Anti Fashion Party’. This might sound odd as I’m a fashion designer myself. Well, it’s not. For us anti-fashion is all about originality, creation and individuality.

Oh my, oh my… what are you wearing? Everybody in fashion is looking all kinds of fly wearing their bathing slippers and white sporting socks; even Prada’s collection referenced this trend with embellished plastic sandals worn with knee-high socks. What strikes me is that if your father wore something like that, you’d probably think that look sucks big time. Which it maybe does. It’s quite remarkable how we perceive clothing and the meaning it’s given by the wearer. How something considered ‘not done’ can be embraced by the fashion community.

Although Coco Chanel revolutionised fashion with affordable jersey clothing and costume jewellery, I wonder if she could have ever imagined the strength of her creations and brand. It seems like you can buy a Chanel T-shirt in every boutique, and what I find odd is that these are not real. I’ve even seen a stencil on the Internet with which you can spray your own Chanel shirt. It seems to me like a big contradiction that you would want to wear a shirt with the Chanel logo but not for it to be real; to tap into the world of Chanel, but not acknowledge it as such.

Trendy Words by Bas Kosters

Ooooh, don’t you just hate the word 'trendy'? It's the least trendy word around, so old-fashioned. And we can’t say 'yolo' anymore either, or can we? It's rather funny now, because it's not trendy anymore. In this digital world, trends spread like diseases though the Internet. One day everybody says 'yolo', the next it’s 'cray cray'. Everybody in Holland says 'yass' right now, and I really don’t know why, it's kind of cute though. Wonder what we will be saying next month...

Bye Bye.

This is a portrait of one of my dolls – you might know I'm also a  doll maker. I made her with a selection of antique lace, which gave new life to these pieces of fabric. Although the sentence 'Always In Style' is kind of awful, there's a certain truth, maybe even hope to it. Classic styles and materials that have proven their value can be inspiring because, in this world of mass production, it's good to treasure clothing and materials, and wear them often or re-use them, simply because there's already so much in this world.

Hairy Sausage by Bas Kosters

Mamma Mia, I've had it with all those bearded guys! This facial hair trend has really taken over, and it's got a bit too much for my liking. You see a beard on every corner of the street. It's time for a new era in facial appearance – maybe a baby face with some nice blush?

One good thing to come out of it though is the acceptance for bearded women as our beloved Conchita Wurst proved when she won the Eurovision song contest. Finally, the bearded lady came out of the circus and into the spotlights. Hurray!

Bas Kosters Frida Kahlo Complex

In Holland 40-plus women sometimes seem to be suffering from a Frida Kahlo complex – they want to embody her artistry and strength by putting flowers in their hair.In magazines we've recently also seen a lot of Kahlo references, especially on bearded men. I hope these bearded men felt empowered by it. I'm glad though that we have role models to inspire us; true style and attitude inspirers.

Bas Kosters 'Ballet Dancer'

Have you ever dreamed of being something different than what you're now? A secret ambition?

This guy above is dreaming of being a ballet dancer, but he might not have the build or elegance to pursue his dream. Maybe he should just wear the tights and ditch the Lacoste shirt to bring him closer to his goal. Can clothing bring us closer to our ambition, or is that just wishful thinking? I hope this guy can pursue his dreams and make ballet tutorials for us on YouTube.

Bas Kosters invites you to visit the 'Couture Graphique' exhibition at MUDAC in Lausanne, Switzerland. It is the first exhibition to explore the relationship between fashion and graphic design. It underlines an interesting phenomenon that until now has attracted relatively little interest: the use of fashion clothing and accessories as a means of communication in their own right.
The exhibition was designed for the MOTI – Museum of the Image, in Breda (Netherlands) by José van Teunissen.
