Do you like treats? Well, you could take a look at the latest collection presentation of Chanel on the Internet, because a treat is was. Many euros were spent on building a Parisian street décor inside a building – all to treat the fashion press to an experience they could already experience on their way to the show, rushing trough the streets of Paris. To tap into Parisian street life, the show ended with a supermodel protest march supporting feminism. Although there is something to say for the quote ‘make fashion not war’, the protest came as a surprise to me.

Jean Paul Gaultier showed his last ready-to-wear collection with a statement that the raging pace of fashion leaves too little time for true creativity. With Jean Paul creating 8 collections per year, that’s a statement I understand. However, he will keep on creating couture collections, pieces that take a lot of time and attention, but it’s unfortunate that those pieces are not for everybody. So can couture be perceived as slow fashion?

Do you remember Kim Kardashian’s most talked about outfit at the Met Gala in 2013? It was a head-to-toe floral outfit; some people compared her to a couch, even robin Williams tweeted that he wore it better as Mrs. Doubtfire.

This week Marni presented the new floral at Milan Fashion Week. At the show, fashion editors could buy a Marni flower bag and flowers at the Marni flower market – proceeds went to a good cause. Even though it looked a bit like Chanel’s supermarket, it was still a charming publicity stunt.

The world is confused. At a time when the economic crisis still leaves its mark on our lives, it’s difficult to make up your mind about which route to take. While we’re looking for a state of mindfulness, you can wonder till which extent to take this. Should we still eat at McDonald’s, if we know the things they serve can’t be considered actual food, or should we only eat soy yogurt with fruit from local farmers.

Some things are just plain odd, and let me explain to you why. Every now and then, nude colours are very en vogue, and if you look from up close you might ask yourself whether there’s anything wrong with that. In Holland we ride bikes on a regular basis, and do you have any idea how someone wearing nude colours looks from afar when you pass them on your bike?

I’m not one to talk negatively online because that’s something I don’t really appreciate, but there is something that surprises me time after time. As probably a lot of you know, I spend quite some time online and on my mobile, and what has really caught my eye lately is the phrase ‘long hair, don’t care’ or any other kind of hair-accompanying selfie. So you show your long hair, blue hair or any kind of hair to us, but you pretend not to care. Why would you even bother to show us that hair if you don’t care?

It’s almost September, so in fashion land that means it’s time for ‘The September issue’. It is an exciting and stressful time, for those who work at one of the large fashion titles it has been a manic time – like giving birth to a whole new season of fashion. In this digital era, the September print issue is still very important, a way for magazines to present their vision and connect with their readers. Although the digital platforms surrounding the issue are also becoming more important, as we see by numerous making-of videos which tickle our appetite.

Years ago I was on holiday with friends in Manchester, walking around the fields outside of town. We were visiting a pub in the middle of the fields when a guy at the bar asked us if we were in a band. I said, “Yeah we are, The White Shoes.” And what do you know, the young girls are all of a sudden wearing monstrous big white plastic shoes. I’d always thought white shoes were for the elderly or nurses. Fashion always seems to surprise me and in the case of these white shoes, it certainly did. What can I say?

Guuurl, what are those? Those claws? Pointy fluo or glitter claws are all the rage. We’ve all seen the posts on Instagram, nails galore! Beauty trends come and go, although I can’t say for sure if you can consider these cyber-nails true beauty, but our nails are a hot topic. Usually in times of crisis, sales of red lipstick rise, like painting your lips and spending more time on your appearance might chase bad times away. After last year’s red lipstick trend, now nails get their turn.

Yes people, it’s festival season! And that’s why every mainstream fashion chain has designed a festival collection for us. Can we explain this as an ultimate service to their customers? Or a devious scheme to make them spend more money? Where people once used to wear their old clothes, festivals have become a part of mainstream culture, and are a place to dress up and show yourself. If you Google festival fashion, you get thousands of images of people all looking the same.
