2015 is the year of the new drag superstars, the drag celebrities and the new drag entertainers. What a surprising development, and what a good one too – let me tell you why.
When I moved to Amsterdam drag was almost a taboo. Having worked in a gay club with a herd of drag queens I was quite astonished that in this city drag was not alive and kicking. After a small hi-rise in the 1990’s with drag queens on national television, drag was dead.

Half a year ago I was looking for a pair of flare jeans, and I had such a hard time getting hold of them. I spoke about it with my assistants, but they had no clue what kind of pants I meant.  I have a few names for it in Dutch but it did not ring a bell. In the end I found a pair in a vintage shop, which was a stroke of luck, because the numerous vintage shops in Amsterdam don’t stock them at the moment. As you can understand from the effort I put in, I needed those pants, because I’m a 70’s kid. I love flare pants, bell-bottoms, whatever you call them.

It’s party time; it’s party time, hurray!
This is my 52nd column, which means that a year has passed since I started as a columnist at Dash Magazine. What started out, as some lighthearted texts to accompany my drawings became a more complete and signaling unity of words and image, in which I really found my way.
A year passed so quickly, and 52 are quite an amount of columns. When I go trough the folder on my computer, I am happy and surprised about all the stories we shared.

I am wearing a pair of pants today, which I bought in 1999 when I was in art school, and a Snoopy shirt that I bought in NY in 2004. I am glad I still fit them, they are part of my history called: Wardrobe.
There has been so much to do about conscious fashion lately, which is a good development but how will we get this development transformed into a new standard.

Are you involved in politics? Is watching the news and reading the papers part of your daily routine? At least you read my column, but my column’s are mostly about fashion, and about people and their behaviour.

To my happy surprise I can now send multi racial emoticons to my friends, and I think it is so cool. It is a kind of “better late than never” happiness, because it actually shouldn’t be more than normal. For a worldwide used app like emoticons is, the fact that they are engaged in striving for equality is a good thing. Next to multiracial emoticons, they also have a queer and lesbian emoticon.  Although the biggest battles have been fought concerning racial and sexual equality, there is still a way to go, could emoticons help us in making a better world?

I am in Denmark this week to teach fashion. The first I noticed was that also in Denmark everybody has big colourful shoes.  Bright, opulent, fluorescent shoes, or trainers to be exact. This is not the newest trend but it is definitely a thing. They brighten up any dull and bland outfit they are usually worn with.

What an eventful week, in Holland we celebrated National liberation day, in New York they celebrated the Met Gala.
I spoke yesterday at an event, a lecture about identity, and the use of myself as a carrier for artistic expression, which off course is a direct result of the freedom that I have in my daily life. To me this is a very important right, which I value greatly. This freedom not only results in my actions but also in my choice of dressing.

Does ownership matter if you have a smartphone? Let’s say that you are craving a new Moschino suit, and you go out to the shop, try it on, and make a fitting room selfie. You put it on Instagram and Facebook. the world sees you wearing that suit. Is your digital entourage happy for you, or envious?
Next point, are you going to buy that suit, or does this picture brush up your persona in a way that might not actually need that suit?

I’m so confused this week; I just do not know what to wear. Last night when cycling home, it was just plain cold, and I was wearing a very optimistic summer outfit. I’m so longing for the summer, when you can just throw on some clothes, and not have to think about scarfs, mittens and other articles that keep you warm and snuggly.

How does fashion influence the way we eat? I was a having a coffee recently and had a craving for a fresh croissant. The way it smells just makes you want to have one. But the fact was that I’d just come from the pool, to get some exercise and to kind of stay in shape. I actually felt kind of guilty after I ate that luscious croissant, although it was very tasty. But what does this guilt say about me, and where does it come from?

I had a little brainwave this week, and found it quite amusing, although the matter is rather concerning. Let me share my thoughts. By the way, LGBT stands for: lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender. More and more alarming signs of intolerance towards the global LGBT community are in the news. Numerous countries are debating laws against acts of homosexuality, whilst in other countries rights to decline LGBT patients were proposed.

This column is an ode to my father. My father suddenly passed away recently. As my family and me were with him during his last week, a lot of thoughts ran through my mind. I was suddenly confronted with his legacy. Was did he teach me and what tools did he give me. My father was very caring, opinionated and engaged. Important life lessons of which I realised play an important role in my life. How special, that what a parent can give you. I am glad that my father recognised the lessons that he taught me, because they form an important part in my work.

As vintage erotica is an inspiration for my work, I have a good excuse to surf the web for obscure images. I once found a website dedicated entirely to jeans fetish sexy pictures categorised in the then popular jeans brands like Levi’s and Lee Jeans. Also nowadays different kinds of clothing and clothing brands are the subject of people’s sexual desires. Especially in the gay scene there are fetishes for sportswear, sports shoes, underwear and sport socks.
